Focus Areas

CEIL is an interactive knowledge center with news, expert advice, discussion groups, webinars, and podcasts — all devoted to providing a one-stop shop for resources, best practices and innovations in sustainability in the public sector. Our knowledge center is divided into seven primary focus areas:

EnergyIcon

Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

From reducing petroleum consumption by 2% each year to planning net-zero buildings by 2020, energy efficiency and renewable energy adaptation are central to the comprehensive requirements of Executive Order 13514. This section contains resources about renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.

FacilityIcon

Facility Design and Management

Under Executive Order 13514, 15% of existing buildings and leases need to meet the Guiding Principles standards by 2015 and all buildings planned in 2020 and thereafter will need to be net-zero buildings. This section includes information and resources related to these requirements.

WorkforceIcon

Federal Workplace and Workforce

Meeting greenhouse gas reduction targets - both direct and indirect - requires establishing low-carbon workplaces as defined in section B of Executive Order 13514. This section contains information about meeting those.

ProcurementIcon

Procurement and Products

Ninety-five percent of all federal contracts will have green requirements, such as products must contain non-ozone depleting and recycled content, and must be non-toxic or biobased in general, under Executive Order 13514. This section contains information about "green" purchasing and products.

TransportationIcon

Transportation and Alternative Fuels

Under EO 13514, fleets of 20 vehicles or more must reduce petroleum use by 2% each year through 2020. This section covers issues and resources about transportation and fleet management.

RecycleIcon

Waste Management and Recycling

Section E of Executive Order 13514 requires that at least 50% of non-hazardous solid waste and at least 50% of construction and demolition waste to be diverted by 2015.  Information about waste disposal and recycling can be found here.

WaterIcon

Water and Wastewater

Potable, industrial, landscaping, and agricultural water use must be reduced by 2% each year under Executive Order 13514. This section includes water efficiency resources to achieve these reductions.
